What Causes Athlete’s Foot?
Also known as tinea pedis, Athlete’s foot is a fungal skin infection that affects your feet. It’s highly contagious, and can spread through contact with contaminated surfaces or affected skin.

- The infection is easily passed on, but some people tend to be more susceptible to it than others, especially with advancing age.
- Exposure to contaminated skin, floors or objects, especially in warm and moist environments, raises the risk of spreading the infection.
- Symptoms include burning, itching, pain and scaling in the feet, and these are usually treated with OTC/prescription antifungal medication.
- If you’ve ever had Athlete’s foot in the past, you’re more likely to get it again, so avoid exposure and treat inflammation as early as possible.
- Even if you don’t show any symptoms, you could pass on the infection to others if you’ve been in contact with infected surfaces or skin.
